Production resumed at Barrick Gold Corp.'s North Mara mine in Tanzania after hundreds of people invaded a pit on Dec. 11, causing $15 million of damage, company spokesman Vincent Borg said.
"North Mara is running as usual, operations were suspended in the Nyabirama pit only," Borg said in an e-mail yesterday.
As many as 400 people threw stones at security officers, attempted to steal ore and destroyed mining equipment, according to a statement from Barrick on Dec. 11. After several hours of clashes with security personnel, riot police restored calm.
Gold output at North Mara, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Kenya, was almost 237,000 ounces in 2007, according to Barrick's Web site. Barrick also owns the Tulawaka and Bulyanhulu gold mines in the east African nation and is scheduled to open a fourth, known as Buzwagi, next year.
