Zambia's Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has sent a team of safety inspectors to Baluba mine to investigate reports it faces flooding following the removal of underground water pumps, the Daily Mail reports Monday.
The state-owned newspaper quoted Maxwell Mwale, minister of mines and minerals development, as saying inspectors left for the mine Saturday and are expected to present their findings this week.
Luanshya Copper Mines, which owns Baluba, suspended operations at the mine in December citing low global metal prices.
"This government is working hard to ensure the mine is brought back to full operation, so we shall not allow the mine to flood," Mwale was quoted as saying.
The paper reported further the government had given additional instructions to a technical committee which will decide the fate of the mine. Company officials couldn't be reached for an immediate comment.
Falling global copper prices have hit a number of mining operations in Zambia. Luanshya has also suspended construction work at its $351 million Mulyanshi Copper Mine and at Chambishi Metals, Zambia's leading cobalt producer.
